This week in my Bible class my teacher asked us a question, “What would you say to someone who claimed to be a Christian but picked and chose what parts of the Bible they thought were true?”
I think this is a pretty common occurrence in modern-day Christianity, especially in the postmodern world that we live in where even the existence of objectivity is refuted. Since it is so common, I think it’s important for us to be able to answer this question, because without taking time to think about it I would have no clue what to say to someone who lived by this ideology.
After spending some time meditating on the Word and talking with God, here’s what I would say:
Christianity is set apart from any other religion by the distinctive idea that God Himself is the Truth and therefore the Author of our faith. When you take the God-made Christian faith that uses the whole Bible as God-breathed text and change it in any way, it’s no longer Christianity that you believe in. It’s now a man-made lie rather than the God-made truth.
This isn’t evaluating any person’s salvation, I’ll leave that to God, this is merely evaluating their worldview as Christian or other, and in this case, I would say that only counting parts of the Bible as truth would qualify as other. The very foundation of Christianity is the fact that there is objective truth and the deciding factor of what is and isn’t true is God, not man. God clearly says that Scripture is to be used in its entirety as the source for truth:
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17
“Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
2 Peter 1:20-21
And yes, I know that I’m using Scripture to prove the accuracy of Scripture, but there’s so much more that authenticates it, even looking at the historicity alone is more than enough proof. So once you’ve determined that the Bible is true, once you’ve realized that Christianity is created by a separate omniscient entity rather than by man like most other religions, you must either accept the truth as the Creator of Truth made it, or admit that you’re using a fallen human mind to do fallen human reasoning and come to a fallen human conclusion.
I say this in love and compassion, not in judgment. Nobody has everything right, because of our sin natures every single person is messed up in their thinking. The good thing is that God has made a way to Himself that doesn’t rely on us believing or acting perfectly, it relies on the One who we put our belief in.
I’m encouraging you, I’m urging you, put your faith in the One who is Truth and offers Truth freely through every word of the Bible. Align your beliefs with the faith that God made, don’t try to remake it man’s way.
